Which schools are eligible for SMARTWorks support?

SMARTWorks will assist any public or private school within Jackson County.

SMARTWorks helps schools to reduce waste:

  • Works with staff to conduct a survey that identifies opportunities for waste reduction
  • Compiles a solid waste recommendations report
  • Advises on equipment, materials, and logistics to implement new business practices
  • Trains staff, provide educational materials and help develop signage to make the program a success

SMARTWorks also helps students and teachers to reduce waste:

  • Provides age appropriate recycling signage and handouts for classrooms
  • Assigns Master Recyclers to help teach students about recycling and waste prevention
  • Connects teachers with JCRP education programs and resources

Adopt-A-Schools will help maintain your school’s recycling program each year:

  • Through a program called Adopt-A-Schools, SMARTWorks organizes Master Recycler volunteers to visit your school at the beginning of each year. They will help make sure that bins are in place, signs are updated, and staff is trained
  • Adopt-A-School volunteers are “on call” throughout the year to assist you as solid waste questions and needs arise

  • If your school is ready to make sustainability a priority by exploring ways to reduce waste, save water and conserve energy, check out Oregon Green Schools
  • Local solid waste experts can be assigned to assist your school achieve Oregon Green School status
